Grade 6 Transition
So far this month, we have twice welcomed around 130 Grade 6 students for ‘transition afternoons’ to introduce our Grade 7 class of 2021 to some of the facilities, subjects, teachers and opportunities at Burnie High School. On these afternoons, the students (both eager and nervous) have arrived after lunch for taster lessons of high school subjects. During the four-week program, the students participate in lessons in Home Economics, Art, PE, MDT, Performing Arts and an induction lesson which includes a tour of the school. After each lesson, the students have been buzzing about the new experiences, pizzas, key rings, paintings, fun, and the new spaces and faces. We host them again this week and next week for the final two transition afternoons. We then eagerly await welcoming them for their Orientation Day on Thursday 3 December which will give the Grade 6 students an experience of a typical day at Burnie High School.
2021 SRC Nominations
On Monday this week our Grade 9 students started the SRC 2021 nomination process. Mr Munday, Mrs Gaby, Mr Thompson and current SRC members Aidan and Olivia spoke about the qualities of SRC members, what the role entails, and the benefits students can gain from nominating themselves. This week students who are interested are required to fill out a nomination form describing why they are a suitable candidate. Voting by Grade 9 students and staff will take place on Thursday in order to finalise the ‘Top 20’. The ‘Top 20’ will be required to give a speech to their Grade 9 peers and produce a poster to be displayed in the café common next week. Final voting will then take place with Grades 7-9 students and staff. I wish all students who nominate the best of luck.
2020 Athletics Carnival
Last week we held our annual school athletics carnival. We were lucky enough to get through the two days without any of the forecasted wet weather, and this year saw a close tussle between houses. Cam came from behind early on day two and were the eventual winner making it a clean sweep of carnivals in 2020.

Children’s Theatre performances
Mr Lohrey, Miss Darvell, and Miss Welsh’s Grade 9 and 10 Drama students have been working very hard over the past three months to prepare three Children’s Theatre performances for presentation to students at our feeder primary schools. The students involved in Snow White and the Seven Weirdos and Sleeping Beauty have completed four very successful performances to students at Cooee, Burnie and Somerset Primary Schools. The cast of Aladdin will perform for the first time today to Cooee Primary School and again at Somerset Primary next Friday. All the students have done a terrific job and are to be congratulated for the enthusiasm, commitment and sense of fun that they have brought to these performances.
Cows Create Careers Competition
Grade 8 Agricultural Studies students recently participated in the Dairy Australia Cows Create Careers competition. One of the competitions was to rename the Dairy Australia calves. On Monday Dairy Australia announced that they are now called Mozzarella & Brie thanks to Matilda Luttmer and her quirky sense of humour!! Congratulations Matilda on winning a $100 iTunes prize.

Premier's Dinner
Business North West (formerly the Burnie Chamber of Commerce) approached Burnie High School with regard to a work experience opportunity at Weller’s Inn on Friday 13November. This opportunity involved students serving Front of House at the Premier’s Dinner for 70 people.
Peter Gutwein, as well as Ministers, local Mayors, Councillors and Business identities enjoyed a three-course meal prepared by Matt Fraser of MATTIS and served by 12 Burnie High School students.
The students attended several briefings with Ms. Prendergast and Miss Smith during their lunch times, before an Induction by Nigel Morgan of Weller’s Inn and Ian Jones (Business North West). The students had a terrific night and it was noted that BHS staff must enjoy really good relationships with their students, for them to be willing to spend a Friday night engaging in a Work Experience opportunity.
All students will receive a certificate of recognition from Business North West.

Sport for Girls
Students were given the opportunity to attend a Pump class at Healthglo in their Sport for Girls lessons. They all enjoyed the class and complained to teachers about being sore the next day.

Cricket
On Thursday 29 October, the Burnie cricket girls went to Wivenhoe football oval and completed against three other teams in a cricket day. The first game we played was against Parklands 1 and we won that game. We then played against Parklands 2 which we also won.
Our last game was against Penguin, both teams went into this game undefeated so it was considered the grand final.
The score was 98-83 and WE WON!

Sport Science Wheelchair Basketball
Kevin Faulkner from ParaQuad Tasmania visited BHS recently with his trailer full of purpose built wheelchairs for basketball. Kevin works with people all over Tasmania to educate them about spinal injuries, risk taking and the consequences of injuring the spine. He also helps people access sport and is an international archer. As part of his demonstration to the Sport Science class, Kevin showed off his effortless wheelchair basketball skills, the best being the way he used his rolling wheel to pick up the ball in one fluid motion. We were all very impressed with that! Students soon realised that not only was it really difficult to push and steer the chair but including the skills of basketball only added to the difficulty. After some driving practice around some markers, many of which were very squashed from being run over, students practiced passing, dribbling and Kevin’s cool ball pick up skills. We were soon ready to put all of those skills into a game but to say the game was low scoring would be an understatement. We realised pretty quickly that it takes a lot of concentration and arm muscle to be in the right spot to receive and shoot the ball. The afternoon was a great example of sports being modified to allow everyone to be included and we all appreciate how talented wheelchair athletes are to play with so much skill. Thank you to Kevin for coming to BHS and taking such a great session. We look forward to him visiting again in 2021.

Congratulations to the year 11/12 students who have successfully completed their studies in Certificate II Pharmacy Assistant and Certificate II in Engineering Pathways.
Students have worked well all year and despite the interruptions due to COVID have all recorded excellent results.
Over the year we have seen many of the students enrolled in this course gain either full-time or part-time employment. Kayden, Damon, Hannah Full-time in 2020.
Rebekah, Trinity, Ella and Felicity all gaining Part-time employment. Josh Medwin and Taj Williams gaining and apprenticeships commencing in 2021.
Fantastic effort from all those involved.

Sports Academy Excursion
The Grade 8 Sports Academy class travelled to Burnie Park on Monday to explore the grounds and complete an Amazing Race scavenger hunt. The race took them all over the park, counting things, reading the information and racing up the stairs near the waterfall. The students all did a marvellous job and finished in plenty of time, after which they turned back the clock and had a play on the equipment. Our next adventure will be in a few weeks’ time when we travel to West Beach for Beach Volleyball.
