Ali Baba and the Raiders of the Lost Pyramid

On Friday September 15, I had the immense pleasure of attending the opening night of the 2023 Burnie High School Production Ali Baba and the Raiders of the Lost Pyramid. What a marvellous show! The highly polished acting, singing, dancing, music, costumes, lighting, and set changes all came together to wow the audience and provide a memorable night of entertainment. I particularly enjoyed the subtle humour that was woven into the script and the vibrancy of the singing and dancing. I thank all students involved in the production, and Mr Ben Lohrey, Miss Maree Welsh, and Miss Bronwyn Darvell, for their commitment to rehearsals that have been underway for all of this year.

I also thank the cast, crew, band and additional staff members Mr Joshua Salter, Miss Eloise Crocker, Mr Kamil Douglas, Miss Brittany Turner, Miss Eliza Jones, Mrs Carly Dilger and Mrs Emma Cohen for their dedication to turning up and giving their best during the performance season.

Last, but not least, thank you parents! Without your support the show would not happen.

Our school community wishes the cast, band, and crew all the very best for the remainder of the performances over this weekend.

Hellyer Enrolment Meetings

A reminder that from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Monday September 25 and Tuesday September 26 our Grade 10 students and their parents will be meeting with a Hellyer College enrolment counsellor at Burnie High School to complete their preliminary enrolment for the 2024 school year. This is an exciting time for our Grade 10 students who we know have been thoroughly prepared by the Grade 10 teaching team for making their course selections for the next step of their learning.

For those students who plan to transition into apprenticeships or traineeships at the end of Grade 10, it is still important that you have completed a preliminary enrolment as a back up plan.

NW High School Netball Championships

The Burnie High School Grade 7/8 netball team played five games of netball on Tuesday September 19 in the NW High School Championship. The team were successful in their initial pool, coming away with three very easy wins. The team then played a cross over semi-final and were victorious, taking them through to the grand final match against Marist. The BHS team fought hard in what turned out to be the closest game of the day, pulling away at one stage to a 3-point lead before the score was again levelled by Marist. Some timely turnovers in defence allowed the BHS team to regain their lead to win the game by two goals. The team will compete in the High School State Final in November. We wish our 9/10 team the best of luck on Thursday 21 September.(we can probably add something in here once this is over)

Oscar Young - Australian Cross Country Championships

One of the great parts of my job is hearing from students about their endeavours in out of school activities. This week I was thrilled to receive the following report from Oscar about his experience at the 2023 Australian Cross County Championships. I encourage all students to let me know about your extra curricula endeavours.

Report from Oscar

I developed a love of running about a year ago and have been training under a coach since then. This year, I ran well at school and inter-high cross country. A second place at Symmon's Plains earnt me a place on the team to represent Tasmania in the Australian Cross Country Championships in Canberra.

The course was a 6km undulating grass circuit which included some hills and hay bales to make it more authentic. There were over 100 athletes on the start line, as my race had U17 and U18 males combined. The day was warm with little wind and it was a tough race. I acheived a personal best time but Australia and New Zealand have some fast runners, so my placing was 36th for U17.

The trip included an excursion to the National Museum with the Athletics Tasmania team on the Sunday and wrapped up with relay and time trials on the Monday. A highlight was travelling/staying with some of my training buddies and having my coach, Daniel Reeves come to support us in the race.
